Have you ever wondered about what does it take to connect networks and computers to one another? Network cable, in conjunction with the associated hardware (network switches, hubs, demarcation equipment) is the reason in enabling computers transfer and connect data across intranets (internal network) and over the internet. The network cabling of today is utilized for a wide variety of reasons other than computer networking. It can be used to carry video for security camera systems, as also video for cable TV and AV (Audio/Visual) Applications. Network cabling may also be utilized as a control cable within Building Maintenance Systems and Access Control Systems. There are a variety of cables that are used for this purpose, such as unshielded twisted pair(twisted pair), shielded pair, fiber optic and coaxial. In certain instances, only one type of cable can be utilized in a network however, in other instances there are many types employed. Wireless networks are becoming increasingly fashionable, but it is important to remember that you need to have network cabling to connect wireless systems. There are two characteristics that make network cable better than a wireless network because it is more secure and reliable.

This is the type of cable that is used to connect various Ethernet networks. There are four sets of wires inside the cable. It has a durable plastic separator to keep each pair completely isolated throughout the course of the cable. The wires are twisted so there will be absolutely no interfering from any other device on the network. The wires are also bent with different intervals, which means they don't cause interference between themselves. When there's a great deal of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), like in a space with mechanical components you can opt to use shielded twisted pair, which has an outer shielding for additional protection against EMI. Categories 5e, 6, 6A and 7 are all the common choices today. Twisted pair cables are limited to 295' for the horizontal route. Twisted pairs cable is used for a wide range of purposes. Standard station cabling for computers and VOIP phones wireless access points network cameras, access control and maintenance of buildings are just some. This is one of the most reliable types of cables, and when it is used, network problems are much less frequent than when other cables are used.

Fiber optic cable is usually used for backbone cables, but it is now being used more and more often as a station cable (think of FIOS). By backbone cable I mean that it links Telecommunication Rooms within a space to each other. Fiber optic cables have huge capacity for broadband, allowing it to transmit large amounts of information as super fast speeds. Fiber cables can span huge distances(hundreds of meters) than copper cables. Because they have to endure such a high workload and because the information can travel such distances there are numerous layers of protective coatings for fiber optic cables. They transmit light as rather than electrical current. Fiber optic cables require less power than high speed copper does. The fiber optic cables are an excellent option for high speed, reliable communications.

Cable paths must steer clear of electrical fixtures as well as the other potential sources of EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference). Maintain cable paths in a safe areas of the ceiling to allow for future cable runs and ease of maintenance. All paths should be laid above corridors or hallways and cables should be inserted into individual rooms using smooth 90-degree turns. Install a firestop sleeves or putty for any penetrations into a fire wall. Be careful when pulling cables so as not to cause them to bend beyond their bend radius. This could result into a failure during testing. Don't tie cables to hanging ceiling slats, or even sprinkler pipes. They should be tied at about every 5' for horizontal runs, and more frequently on vertical runs. J-hooks should be attached on the concrete deck above. Wrap velcro around them every 5' or so when done running cable in order to provide your cable bundles with a beautiful, attractive finish.
