Have you ever wondered about what it is that connects networks and computers to one another? Network cable along with the associated hardware (network hubs, switches and demarcation equipment) is responsible with computers being able to connect and transfer data between intranets (internal networks) and over the internet. Network cabling is currently used in a variety of ways, not just for computer networking. It can be used to carry video for security camera systems, as along with video for video cable television and audio (Audio/Visual) applications. Network cabling can also be used as a control wire in Building Maintenance Systems and Access Control Systems. There are several different types of cables being used for this purpose. These include unshielded twisted pair(twisted pair), shielded pair fiber optic and coaxial. In certain cases, just one kind of cable is utilized in a network while in other cases multiple types are utilized. Wireless networks are becoming more and more fashionable, but it is important to remember that you need to have network cabling for wireless systems. There are still two elements which make network cabling superior than wireless networks as it is far more safe and reliable.

This is the type of cable that is utilized in many Ethernet networks. There are four sets of wires inside the cable. The cable has a heavy plastic separator that keeps each pair separated along the entire length of cable. Both pairs are twisted so there will be in no way to interfere with devices within the network. They are also twisted with different intervals, which means they do not cause interference between each other. If there is a significant amount of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), like a mechanical area it is possible to use a shielded twisted couple that has the outer shielding and provides extra protection from EMI. Categories 5e, 6, 6A and 7 are the most common options available today. Twisted-pair cable is limited to 295' in vertical runs. Twisted couple cable is used in many ways. Standard station cabling for computers as well as VOIP phones wireless access points network cameras, access control and buildings maintenance equipment are just several. This is one of the most reliable kinds of cables. When they are in use, network failures tend to be less common than the other cables used.

Fiber optic cable can be used for backbone cables, but it is being used more and more as station cable (think FiOS). By "backbone" cable, I mean the cable connects Telecommunication Rooms within the same space to one another. The fiber optic cable has enormous broadband capabilities, which permit it to carry huge amounts of information at super fast speeds. Fiber cables can span huge distances(hundreds of meters) which is not the case with copper cables. Because they work so hard and the data is transferred over long distances there are many layers of protective coatings that are present on fibre optic cables. Fiber cables transmit light as instead of electrical current. Fiber optic cables require less power than high-speed copper. Fibre optic cable can be an excellent option for high speed, reliable communications.

Cable paths must stay away from electrical light fixtures or additional sources that could cause EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference). Cable paths should be located in easily accessible portions of the ceiling to allow for future cable runs as well as ease of maintenance. The paths must be positioned over corridors or hallways, and cables are introduced into individual rooms by broad 90 degree turns. Install a firestop cover or putty for all penetrations of the wall. Take care when pulling cables to ensure not to cause them to bend beyond their bend radius. This will cause a failure when testing. Do not tie cables onto roof hangers and sprinkler pipes. They need to be tied at five feet at a minimum on horizontal runs and more frequently for vertical runs. J-hook supports need to be attached with concrete decks above. Apply velcro wraps every 5' or so , when you've complete running cable to provide your cable bundles with an attractive finish.
